At a time when relations between the media and the Trump White House is fraught with tension (dare we say: Stormy Daniels, prior restraint, Rexit, H.R. McMaster?), the decision to publish top-secret documents revealing government lies and cover-up is as relevant now as in 1971 when the movie takes place.
When a disillusioned strategic analyst Daniel Ellsberg (Matthew Rhys) leaks top-secret documents to The New York Times, The Washington Post finds itself thoroughly scooped. The courts and the Nixon administration bar the Times further publication for 15 days by citing national security. The first female publisher of a major American newspaper, Katharine Graham (Meryl Streep) and executive editor Ben Bradlee (Tom Hanks) throw themselves into the race to publish The Pentagon Papers and an unprecedented battle between the American press and the U.S. government, risking everything.
Watch the trailer here:
Historian Niels Bjerre-Poulsen and author Peter Christensen (“Scoop”) will introduce the movie (in Danish). They will present the political and societal changes in the U.S. and in Denmark in the 1970s, and put into context what lead to the leaking of The Pentagon Papers and the media’s decision to publish them. After the 30-minute introduction the movie will be shown.
